Our Memorable Olive Harvest Experience

In the heart of the Riviera dei Cedri, my farmer friend's family has been passionately cultivating olives for years, embracing traditional and organic farming practices. With tremendous care and commitment, they work by hand, tending to the olive trees throughout the year. It's fascinating to witness their dedication to growing olives without the use of harmful chemicals, ensuring the highest quality and healthfulness of the olive oil produced.

The olive cultivation is a delicate process highly dependent on weather conditions. The family faces numerous challenges as they navigate through the changing climate patterns. Adverse weather, such as heavy rains or unexpected cold snap, can significantly impact the harvest yield. However, these challenges only strengthen their determination and resilience, making each harvest season a true testament to their commitment to producing exceptional olive oil.

From Tree to Mill: A Race Against Time

One of the most captivating aspects of the olive harvest is the urgency to deliver the freshly harvested olives to the oil mill on the same day. This time-sensitive process ensures the preservation of the olives' quality and flavors. Witnessing the race against time as the family works diligently to gather the olives and transport them swiftly to the mill is an awe-inspiring experience.

Last year, I had the pleasure of attending an olive oil tasting event at Oleficio Sagario in Praia a Mare, that forever changed my perspective on mass-produced oils. The unique flavors and health benefits of the olive oil produced by small-scale producers on the Riviera dei Cedri were truly remarkable. The attention to detail, organic cultivation methods, and immediate processing contribute to the exceptional taste and healthfulness of the oil.

I wholeheartedly recommend readers to embark on their own olive oil discovery journey. Seek out local small stores or markets that offer bottles of olive oil produced by these dedicated artisans. By doing so, you not only support sustainable farming practices but also unlock a world of exquisite flavors and health benefits that mass-produced oils simply cannot match.

Visiting my farmer friend during the olive harvest was an adventure filled with awe-inspiring moments and a deep appreciation for the art of organic farming. The Riviera dei Cedri is a region where the love for olives is deeply ingrained in the local culture.
